Car Commercials
Yeah so summer has been killer sweet recently. You may have seen I have not posted for a good month. I know I am an incompetent blogger. However, in my defense I have had a lot of sleep and swimming to catch up on. Ok now that the formalities are out of the way lets get down to business. What is the deal with car commercials? In the years of my life I have seen enough commercials for cars to pretty much be an expert on the subject. If you disagree well then you write a blog post about car commercials, or one stating the reasons why I am disqualified to speak on this subject. Some of these commercials are high-quality and show this bran new car swerving down the road and taking turns tightly. There are shots of leaves following the car and the grass rustling as it passes. All the while, there is some deep voiced narrator blabbing statistics about the fuel efficiency and luxury of this vehicle. Then at the end they show the black screen and the car symbol and some great offer of 0% APR or a cash back bonus of whatever.
On the other end of the spectrum are the absurd commercials. I have seen cars talking to cartoon crabs, cars playing a some kind of keep-away game with a red 4-square ball. Cars have eaten other cars. Then there is always that commercial around the holidays when someone has a big bow on a car. The examples are endless.
First of all, commercials have the purpose of influencing people to buy their product. Something these companies tend to forget is that a car is not like a hamburger or a doughnut (which by the way, why do they call it that ? Doughnuts do not taste look or in anyway resemble nuts. They should be called dough-rings, because that is truly what they are; rings of dough) I am very unlikely to spontaneously go out and buy a bran new $20,000 car because I have seen a funny commercial. Who is really that fickle? Not to mention the fact that most of the cars out there today look pretty much exactly the same. Secondly, I’d like to know what person is sitting on their couch thinking, “Crap what gift should I get for that special someone for Christmas this year?” Then all of a sudden they see it on TV. That’s it instead of a $30 sweater I will get her a bran new Lexis with a giant bow. On a side note, I am definitely going to buy my first new car during the holiday season just so I can go there and demand that they put a giant red bow on my car like in the commercial. I will keep screaming “The customer is always right!” Until they find one and put it on. And I will drive home on the freeway with that bow on my car. Otherwise, I’m going to sue for false advertising. But, that is just a side note. I guess my real point is that I don’t think anyone in the world is influential to go out and buy a car on a whim because of any commercial. I mean even if someone was that impulsive, they would need a second person to come with them. Both the car they drive there and the new one will need to be brought home. I think that second guy would at least as the guy why he wanted this car. When that man replied, “Well I saw this commercial where the car convinced a crab not to pinch it… and well that is the kind of car I want.” The other man would reply. “You’re an idiot! You spend your money like a fool.” or “Your rich but still spend your money like a fool!” Anyways I guess my point in car commercials confuse me as to what there intended purpose is.
